It was a good year for all the bands and a busy one. They received the highest ratings in the Hawaii Music Educator's Association Parade of Stage Bands. In February, STAGE BAND III performed at The Carol Kai Bedrace Concert at the Waikiki Shell and later Miss Kai performed at the Stage Band Dinner held at the C'est Si Bon supper club. The highlight of the year was a week long trip to Los Angeles, California and Fort Worth, Texas by the members of the Stage Band III where they performed at Knott's Berry Farm and the Texas Christian University Jazz Festival where they received a superior rating. STAGE BAND I and STAGE BAND III are directed by Wayne DeMello and STAGE BAND II is directed by Fred B. Li. The recording sessions took place during class periods in April and May 1981. The recording studio has been upgraded to include an eight-channel multi-track tape deck, and a twenty-input mix-board. My Funny Valentine and Burbank Sackbut Brigade, were recorded live at Kaimuki Auditorium during the HMEA Parade of Stage Bands using a TEAC 3300 SX 2-track tape deck and a pair of AKG 451 condenser microphones.
