...-I really think it's a shame that they weren't given this time to enjoy the song more; well, what can you tell us about this number, "Juventud del presente"?

-"Juventud del presente" is a number, a little number that I did in guaguancó, so I recorded it in guaguancó rhythm with a tremendous amount of people, that's what I did once when Mr. Mario Ruiz Armengol invited me to record at RCA Victor, and I was lucky enough to gather many Cubans who were here; the quartet Los Cafro, which was Tino Rodriguez, Tony, Margarita de la 0 and Melva, also El Gallego de Matanzas, Aurelio Tamayo, Yeyo, Roberto Puente, Chocolate, Tabaquito mi compadre (because in this same album there is a comparsa number where Manolo plays the trumpet, and Domingo Vernier, Mango, plays the flute, but in another number called "El bombo arrollador"); In this number Guaguancó after I recorded it, I gave it to Celia Cruz, and Celia recorded it with Sonora Matancera and I am very grateful to her, to all the performers who have recorded my music I thank them from the bottom of my heart

Assusu Review by Carl Hoyt

Famoro played with Miriam Makeba and was the bass player for The Balladins until the Guinean government was no longer able to subsidise bands. Put together specifically for this session in 1992, the band includes balafons, drums, flute, voice and electric bass, and, though not so very different from other groups of this nature, has a hard, driving quality to its beat - not as meandering and gentle as Sahelian classical music. The balafon playing is amazing and the addition of the bass and flute add a new texture to one of the most beautiful musical fabrics ever.
